Law enforcement officials have concluded a fraud inquiry concerning the expenses of a Conservative politician. South Wales Police stated that their examination of Laura Anne Jones found “no evidence of fraudulent activity.” Ms. Jones, a Member of the Senedd (MS) representing South Wales East, consistently refuted allegations of submitting fraudulent mileage claims. She had been requested to temporarily withdraw from her responsibilities as a front bench spokeswoman throughout the duration of the investigation. Jones commented that the preceding months were “far from ideal but I have been given strength by the fact of my innocence and from the volume of support that I have received.” She further stated, “I have not let it distract me and I look forward to continuing to serve my constituents to the best of my ability and holding the Welsh Labour government to account.” Police initiated their involvement after Douglas Bain, the Senedd standards commissioner, referred a complaint to the force earlier in the current year. In an official statement, South Wales Police confirmed it had “concluded its investigation into an allegation of fraud following a referral from the Senedd commissioner for standards.” The statement also noted, “No evidence of fraudulent activity has been found and the investigation is now closed. All relevant parties have been updated.” Andrew RT Davies, the Senedd Tory leader, had offered his backing to Jones since the allegations emerged in May. He faced internal criticism from some within his party for not suspending her. Mr. Davies is scheduled to undergo a vote of confidence among Tory MSs on Tuesday, following broader concerns expressed regarding his leadership. With the police investigation now closed, Mr. Bain is able to recommence his own inquiries, should he opt to do so. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
