An individual who admitted to attempting to murder a woman during a knife assault has been incarcerated. David Fletcher, from South Shields, forcibly led his victim to an isolated area situated between two structures in Gilesgate, Durham, where he then attacked her. Appearing before Teesside Crown Court, the 62-year-old entered a guilty plea to charges of attempted murder, possession of a knife, and assault. He received a sentence of 17 years in prison, along with an additional four years under an extended licence. Detective Constable Jack Robinson, of Durham Police, stated that such violence would “not be tolerated”. He also mentioned that the woman had made a full recovery and expressed his hope that she would find “comfort” in the knowledge that her assailant was behind bars. The victim’s life was saved after another woman heard her screams, intervened, and disarmed Fletcher by taking the knife, according to Durham Police.
