Individuals residing in a village impacted by a fuel leak have been informed that eradicating the contamination will require several years. During the spring, 600 residents of Bramley received instructions to avoid consuming tap water due to a fuel leak originating from a petrol station that polluted the local water supply. Jeremy Hunt, the local MP, conveyed via a social media post that an Environment Agency official stated at a public gathering that a three-stage procedure is in place to remove ground pollutants. Mr. Hunt, who presided over Friday’s meeting, posted on his Facebook page that after the third stage, Bramley’s pollutants would ultimately decompose through a natural process “completed over years”. Residents had reported petrol odors for two years prior to the leak’s detection. The origin was identified as an Asda forecourt fuel tank. The leak occurred before the supermarket chain acquired ownership of the location. In October, Asda provided £512,000 to the village as compensation for the inconvenience caused. The meeting, held at St Catherine’s School, was also attended by representatives from Waverley Borough Council, Asda, environmental consultants EPS, and internet provider Openreach. According to Mr. Hunt, the MP for Goldalming and Ash, the meeting was informed that Thames Water’s tests indicated water samples in the vicinity still conformed to UK standards. Councillor Jane Austin, who attended the meeting, stated to BBC Radio Surrey on Monday: “It’s quite concerning to hear it will be years not months until we are free of the fuel contamination.” An intermittent internet connection persists for approximately 246 households, as network provider Openreach has deemed it unsafe for engineers to access underground cables while fuel remains present. Additionally, 25 houses and businesses completely lacking internet access have been supplied with mobile dongles. Openreach reports having successfully resolved issues for 630 addresses in the area without requiring access to underground cables.
