Police have confirmed the arrest of a man and a woman on suspicion of attempted murder after a 74-year-old man sustained serious injuries in County Antrim. The incident occurred on Saturday, shortly after 19:30 GMT, when the elderly man was approached by the two individuals on Station Road in Antrim town. The man reportedly punched the pensioner in the head, rendering him unconscious. He was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment of severe head injuries, where his condition is currently described as critical. A 21-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman have been taken into custody following their arrest on suspicion of attempted murder. They remain in custody. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has issued an appeal for individuals possessing any information or relevant dash-cam footage to assist their investigation. SDLP Antrim councillor Roisin Lynch commented that the assault has “rightly shocked people.” She further stated, “This is a terrible thing to happen to anyone, but to attack a man of 74 years of age in the street and leave him in critical condition in hospital is particularly abhorrent.” Councillor Lynch added, “My best wishes go out to the man impacted and I hope he makes a quick and full recovery, though this will no doubt have been a traumatising experience.” She concluded by emphasizing, “People need to feel safe when walking our streets and there is much concern in the local community following this incident.”
