The Right Reverend Dr Mike Harrison has been officially installed as the 72nd Bishop of Exeter. The installation service took place on Saturday, coinciding with All Souls Day, at Exeter Cathedral. During the ceremony, Bishop Harrison was anointed with oil, took his seat on the medieval bishop’s throne, and received the Exeter crozier, an item traditionally passed down from one bishop to the next. Bishop Harrison stated his intention for his Enthronement Day to focus on the entirety of Devon, encompassing its churches and communities “in all their diversity.” Upon the conclusion of the enthronement service, the bishop proceeded to Cathedral Green, where he offered a prayer of blessing for the inhabitants of Exeter city and the county of Devon. Throughout the day, he also engaged in various activities across the county, including a visit to the White Eagles Hockey Club at Tiverton Leisure Centre. On the pitch, he participated in drills with the under 10s players and met Debbie Gorrod, 74, who is scheduled to fly to New Zealand to represent England at the World Masters Cup. He remarked: “It’s great to see this intergenerational activity, it really acts as social glue for the community. “These kinds of sports clubs are really important for the fabric of local life.” For updates, follow BBC Devon on X, Facebook, and Instagram.
