An inquest has revealed that a showman, belonging to a prominent family of funfair operators, died after being struck while traversing a dual carriageway. The inquest, held at Doncaster Coroner’s Court, was informed that Terence Tuby, aged 75, passed away earlier this year. His family has operated fairs throughout Yorkshire and Lincolnshire for over 150 years. On Monday, the inquest heard that Mr. Tuby was hit by two vehicles around 18:00 GMT on 1 February. He was attempting to cross Greens Way in Mexborough and had not activated the pedestrian lights beforehand. Assistant coroner Abigail Combes was informed that neither driver could have prevented the impact, leading her to conclude that Mr. Tuby’s death resulted from a road traffic collision. The inquest also heard that Mr. Tuby’s father established Arthur Tuby and Sons Funfairs, and his cousin managed Roger Tuby and Son Funfairs. According to his family, Mr. Tuby was born in Mexborough, alongside his twin brother Trevor, and is survived by one son and three grandchildren. In a court statement, Mr. Tuby’s son, James, described his father’s passing as “a great loss,” stating, “I have lovely memories of dad, which I will cherish forever.” He further added that his father was “a showman all his life” who “loved what he did and knew of nothing else.” The court was informed that this location has seen two other pedestrian fatalities and two serious injuries from collisions within the past four years. Ms. Combes noted that while suitable safety measures for pedestrians seemed to be present at the crossing, she would request a report from Doncaster Council. This is to ascertain if a further report should be issued to help prevent future fatalities at the location.
