Darlington Borough Council has granted approval for the construction of a multi-sports complex, which will feature indoor pitches designed for grassroots teams. The approved plans include facilities for football, cricket, tennis, and padel courts, to be located at the Faverdale Industrial Estate in Darlington. This development is integrated into the broader Wards Court scheme, an area that has recently welcomed the establishment of various businesses, including Lidl, Home Bargains, and Starbucks. Kelvin Russell, who serves as chairman for the local football club Hurworth Albion, stated that indoor pitches are “vital” for clubs, particularly during the winter months. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Ward and Sons Holdings Ltd, the applicant, submitted a proposal to construct six units that will comprise the indoor sports facility. The first and second levels of the northern unit are designated to house sports areas, specifically including indoor football, intended to serve grassroots and local teams. An individual who opposed the plan expressed apprehension regarding the neighborhood becoming “overdeveloped with all manner of outlets,” anticipating a “detrimental effect” due to increased noise, litter, and anti-social behavior. Separately, at the same Faverdale site, recent approvals have been granted for a McDonald’s drive-thru, a Taco Bell, a Costa Coffee outlet, a tanning salon, and veterinary services.
