An MP representing Worcestershire has stated that Kemi Badenoch, the newly appointed Conservative leader, carries “awesome responsibility” in her role leading the government opposition. Nigel Huddleston expressed his belief that the Conservative party will be able to persuade voters to return to its ranks, following their loss of power in July. Badenoch’s announcement as the new leader of the Tory party occurred on Saturday, after she secured 56% of a member’s vote, defeating Robert Jenrick. Huddleston, the Tory MP for Droitwich and Evesham, quoted Badenoch, saying: “Kemi has said we want to reach out to people across the political spectrum.” In her victory speech, Badenoch declared it was time for her party to “tell the truth” to voters, with the aim of winning back those individuals who abandoned it during the general election in July. Despite her commitment to engage with people across the political landscape, Huddleston, who is the inaugural MP for the newly formed constituency, indicated he did not believe she would seek to form an agreement with Reform UK. He further elaborated: “Reform is a force to be reckoned with, but I think when we focus on the core values and have a proposition and show that we deserve to win the election again, we will be able to get not only Reform voters back, but will also take votes from Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens and elsewhere. It’s also about character and leadership.” Regarding Badenoch’s initial priorities as leader, Huddleston emphasized the party’s need to concentrate on “core values.” He stated: “I think what we’re going to do is focus on what it means to be a Conservative and develop policies accordingly, because she’s got an awesome responsibility now. We’ve got to hold this government to account, but also we’ve got to prepare for government ourselves and we’ll do that over the next few years.” For updates, follow BBC Hereford & Worcester on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
