Middlesbrough full-back and former Huddersfield captain Tommy Smith recently participated in a discussion with Aaron Paul and Jobi McAnuff. Smith appeared as a guest on “This week’s 72+: The EFL Podcast,” where the Middlesbrough defender reflected on his career journey, encompassing both successful promotions and challenging setbacks. The seasoned right-back, currently recovering from an injury sustained in October 2023, also expressed commendation for Middlesbrough’s head coach, Michael Carrick, who previously captained Manchester United. Smith stated, “One thing you would say about Michael Carrick is – I’ve seen it first-hand as soon as he walked through the door – he coaches and he manages exactly how he plays.” He added, “I think the players can relate to him very, very well.” Smith further elaborated on Carrick’s qualities, saying, “As a player, all you want is clarity and honesty. That’s certainly two things I’ve found over the years that are very, very important when it comes to dealing with managers and coaches and that’s what he gives you.” Middlesbrough represents Carrick’s inaugural permanent managerial position. Prior to this, he served as caretaker manager for the Red Devils in November 2021, a role he held for 12 days before Ralf Rangnick assumed the interim boss position. Despite this, Smith believes the former England international is performing exceptionally well in his initial permanent coaching role. He concluded, stating, “From my point of view, he’s done a terrific job.” The complete episode is accessible for listening on BBC Sounds.
