A rugby club in the Premiership league has filed a revised planning application for its envisioned 18,000-seat stadium. Bath Rugby, which has been based at the Recreation Ground since 1894, is developing proposals to update the venue, enhance its amenities, and expand its capacity from the existing 14,500. The submitted plans detail a reduction in the height of both the east and west stands, intended to offer better views of the adjacent town and rural landscape. Tarquin McDonald, chief executive of Bath Rugby, stated, “The amended submission showcases an exciting vision for the future, with significant public benefits that will positively contribute to the entire community.” He further commented, “We now look forward to the council bringing the proposals to a planning committee in the new year.” Presently, the club utilizes a temporary East Stand, which is typically disassembled and taken down in the summer months to allow for an unimpeded view of the scenery. Initial redevelopment plans were first submitted in 2018; however, their progress has been hindered by modifications in design and legal conflicts that escalated to the Supreme Court. A distinct, revised application was lodged in 2023, and these latest proposals largely maintain existing characteristics, with most alterations concentrated on the stands and seating areas. Mr McDonald remarked, “We’ve listened closely to the community and our stakeholders.” He continued, “We are committed to delivering a stadium that not only meets the needs of our fans but also respects the rich heritage of Bath.” Bath and North East Somerset Council is anticipated to review the application in 2025. Bath is currently experiencing a successful season, holding the top position in the Premiership based on points difference over their West Country competitor, Bristol, following eight matches.
