A 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of a woman’s body, nine days after she was reported missing. Greater Manchester Police indicated that the body matched the description of Mariann, a 55-year-old woman who had been missing from Bolton since December 14. Although formal identification has not yet occurred, the force confirmed that Mariann’s family has been informed of this development and is receiving support from family liaison officers. Police had previously conducted searches for the woman, which included several appeals to the local community. Authorities had stated that initial inquiries suggested suspicious circumstances. The police have not disclosed the location where the discovery was made. Chief Superintendent Helen Critchley stated: “This is a tragic development to our extensive search for Mariann, which we desperately hoped would not be the case so close to Christmas. Our thoughts are with her family at this distressing time.” The force added that the arrested man was being questioned in police custody.
