During the 2023-24 season, Arsenal’s strong campaign was underpinned by a highly consistent and robust defense. This defensive unit conceded only 29 goals, averaging 0.8 per match, and achieved 18 clean sheets across their 38 games. It is possible that the team’s current difficulties stem from this aspect of their play. So far this season, Mikel Arteta’s squad has recorded only three shutouts in 11 matches, yet they maintain the fourth-best record for goals conceded. Notably, the Gunners are executing more tackles per game (17.1 compared to 16.1) with an improved success rate (62% versus 57%). Conversely, they are performing fewer recoveries, almost 10 per game less than the previous season. Despite the absence of a consistent left-back during 2023-24, the defensive core comprising goalkeeper David Raya, Ben White, Gabriel, and William Saliba demonstrated exceptional stability. Saliba participated as a starter in all 38 games, while Gabriel reclaimed his position in the starting lineup by game four and maintained it for nearly the entire season. For the current season, the Brazil defender (Gabriel) has started all 11 matches. However, Saliba was unavailable due to suspension for the match against Liverpool, and White has started only three games this season, fewer than his total starts for the entirety of the previous campaign. These changes are having an impact. Summer acquisition Riccardo Calafiori and the returning Jurrien Timber have proven to be beneficial reinforcements, but their presence has been intermittent. Furthermore, the Gunners have been hampered by disciplinary issues. Three red cards issued to Saliba, Declan Rice, and Leandro Trossard may have resulted in lost points in fixtures against Bournemouth, Manchester City, and Brighton. Considering Liverpool’s strong start to the season, these dropped points have caused Arsenal to fall behind. In contrast, they received only two dismissals throughout the entire 2023-24 season. To regain their defensive performance from the previous season, manager Arteta must re-establish fundamental stability. Sustained consistency in defense will undoubtedly be essential for Arsenal to revive their title aspirations upon the resumption of Premier League football.
