A distinctive Christmas tree, which garnered global attention, has been sectioned to allow individuals to acquire a piece of its history. Its noticeable tilt, measuring 9m (30ft), sparked initial public disapproval upon its installation in March, Cambridgeshire, in 2023. Following its positive impact on the town, a similarly unconventional tree has been procured for the current year. The tree from 2023 was given to the town’s Make and Mend Shed, where volunteers are repurposing it into various items such as stepping stones, clocks, and even a wedding centerpiece. Dave Everett, 66, the Chair, expressed that participating in an initiative that brought “worldwide fame” to the town was “a bit of an honour.” Subsequent to its felling, the 2023 tree was presented to the Make and Mend Shed, a community workshop designed for social engagement through shared projects. Mr. Everett stated: “It had been cut into slices which range from 18in (45cm) round from the base of the tree to 6in (15cm) round from its top and we were very pleased to be offered it.” Due to the use of a chainsaw for slicing, each piece required sanding to achieve an even surface, followed by varnishing of the completed products. Garden stepping stones have been particularly sought after thus far, and the volunteers have also crafted clocks. “Somebody asked us to make a centrepiece for a wedding which turned out really well, using three slices of wood and a branch from another tree,” Mr. Everett reported. He added: “We’re also experimenting with burning the wood to make patterns, although it’s not the easiest thing to do and is still in the early stages.” All proceeds generated will benefit the March Christmas Lights Committee; however, he noted that no fixed prices were established, and contributions were requested through donations. “Something that doesn’t come along that often with worldwide fame so to be involved with it, yes, it is a bit of an honour,” Mr. Everett concluded.
