While a stable defense has been identified as crucial for Arsenal, supporters have valid grounds to advocate for the acquisition of a striker. Despite Arsenal ranking as the Premier League’s second-highest scoring team last season, with 91 goals, this achievement should be contextualized. Their expected goals (xG) figure stood at 77, highlighting the exceptional finishing prowess demonstrated by the Gunners. This current season, the team appears to be performing more in line with expectations, having scored 18 goals against an expected goals (xG) tally of 17.3. This suggests a consistent performance rather than an exceptional one. In the 2023-24 season, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and Leandro Trossard each achieved double-digit goal tallies. Notably, Leandro Trossard exceeded his expected goals (xG) of eight by scoring 12 significant goals. Sustaining that scoring rate would likely be unrealistic, especially given that Arsenal’s shots on target have decreased by one per game this season and key playmaker Martin Odegaard has been absent, leading to a decline in the quality of scoring opportunities. Regarding goal conversion, Kai Havertz currently ranks ninth in the Premier League for expected goals (xG) this season, having netted four goals from an xG of 4.58. The question arises whether a dedicated central striker, comparable to Erling Haaland, would resolve this issue. While Chris Wood of Nottingham Forest possesses an expected goals (xG) figure similar to Havertz but has scored eight goals, it is improbable that Wood would be considered a viable solution to Arsenal’s perceived finishing deficiencies. It could be argued that last season represented Arsenal’s peak performance, characterized by a strong defense and an even more potent attack. In this context, their failure to secure the title might be attributed to the formidable challenge posed by Manchester City. While Kai Havertz’s contribution of four goals in 11 games as Arsenal’s leading scorer might be considered insufficient, it is also somewhat anticipated given his broader contributions to the team. However, he is currently bearing the primary goalscoring responsibility without adequate support. With Martin Odegaard’s return to fitness, Arsenal’s creative output is expected to enhance, a trend observed in their match against Chelsea. This improvement might also extend to their finishing capabilities. Such improvements will likely be essential if Arsenal aims to bridge the significant nine-point deficit separating them from current leaders Liverpool.
