Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has commended a Surrey-based charity for its efforts in delivering essential supplies to individuals in Ukraine. On Friday, Sir Ed visited Surrey Stands With Ukraine, an organization located in Epsom, accompanied by Helen Maguire, the Member of Parliament for the area. While they were there, the charity was assembling aid packages containing items such as portable gas cookers, power banks, and rechargeable torches, intended to assist people through the winter months. Sir Ed stated, “I’ve been utterly inspired by people here in Epsom, from across Surrey, who are giving up days and days, and have been doing it for two years.” He further commented, “To see that compassion, that commitment, is just awe-inspiring.” Maguire expressed that she was also “blown away” by the scope of the charity’s operations. This Surrey-based organization commenced its activities in 2022, coinciding with the start of the conflict. According to co-founder Roy Deadman, “We’ve done £3.5m worth of aid shipped, 118 trucks, a large aerial platform fire engine that we’ve sent there and purchased, a number of vans we’ve sent there, 250 generators, 600 gas stoves and a huge amount of medical equipment [has been sent].”” Deadman initially anticipated that the charity’s operations would conclude within two weeks. “It’s honestly sad that we’re still doing this. We’re doing this now because Russia is still inside Ukraine,” he added.
