Irish player Jamie Osborne has cautioned his team to be vigilant against Fiji, their upcoming opponents, whom he describes as capable of “creat[ing] something out of nothing.” The two teams are scheduled to face each other this Saturday at the Aviva Stadium. Osborne earned his fourth cap last week when he came off the bench against Argentina. Historically, Ireland maintains an undefeated record against Fiji. However, the Fijian team recently secured a notable victory, defeating Wales in Cardiff a fortnight prior. Osborne remarked, “They’re a very good side.” He further elaborated on Fiji’s strengths, stating, “They’ve a couple of gamebreakers in their team, players that can create something out of nothing.” He also noted the challenge in preparing for such an opponent: “They can be hard to prepare for because you don’t want to give them anything, any loose ball.” This autumn, Osborne earned his third and fourth international caps during matches against New Zealand and Argentina, respectively. His debut occurred last summer on the tour of South Africa. Following Ireland’s narrow 22-19 victory over the Pumas, coach Andy Farrell described Osborne’s performance off the bench as “immense.” Despite this, the 23-year-old player acknowledged that the team collectively has yet to reach its peak performance. Reflecting on the recent loss to the All Blacks and the close win against Argentina, Osborne commented, “I think as a team we wanted to be a bit better and think we can perform better than we showed.” He further assessed the team’s recent performances, stating, “Argentina was a step up from New Zealand in terms of how we attacked the game at the start, probably a bit inaccurate and ill-disciplined in the second half.” Osborne concluded by noting, “It was definitely an improvement and we’re hoping to improve again next week.”
