A postcard campaign is addressing negative perceptions of young fathers by showcasing positive depictions of these men with their children. This initiative, named the Reframing Young Fatherhood project, was established by North East Young Dads and Lads (NEYDL), an organization based in Gateshead. NEYDL provides social, financial, and practical assistance to fathers under the age of 25 throughout the region. The charity stated that the portraits were created as a “celebration of dads who are often misunderstood and misrepresented”. TV presenter Jeff Brazier, who became a father at aged 23 and supports the project, commented that young fathers frequently encounter “judgement and stigma”. NEYDL indicated that service providers often disregard young men. According to Founder Kevin Stoodley, the stigma associated with young parenthood can frequently cause them to feel isolated and hesitant to seek assistance from services. “Young dads talk to us about when they are out with their children in public, they get looked at, they get ridiculed, they get verbal abuse,” he stated. He added, “When they seek help from professionals, historically they’ve experienced a stone wall or not been supported.” Stoodley concluded, “The images are challenging communities and their own families to think about young dads differently.” Brazier, currently 45, who has appeared on reality television programs such as Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins and Celebrity MasterChef, expressed that he was “full of admiration” for young dads and “the lengths they go to while often facing excruciating barriers and obstacles”. He asserted that parenthood ought to be a “time of self-development, love and belonging”. However, he noted that this was “sadly not the case for many young men who are forced to start their fatherhood journeys without meaningful support and against the backdrop of judgement, stigma and misunderstanding”. The charity announced that the postcard packs will be distributed to support services nationwide with the aim of challenging any existing stereotypes and demonstrating how to better assist young fathers. Additionally, some of the images are being exhibited at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. Follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.
