Newport County winger Michael Spellman has cultivated patience. Having recovered from an injury sustained mere days before the season commenced with his new team, he is now prepared to join Newport’s starting line-up when called upon. “I can’t wait for it,” stated the former Sunderland wide player, who had been limited to seven substitute appearances prior to Saturday’s League Two match against Tranmere Rovers. Spellman, aged 22, commented: “I have worked hard since my injury and tried to get back as soon as possible to be around the team and to get that sharpness back.” He added, “I am patient and I am ready whenever he (head coach Nelson Jardim) needs me. That is the way you need to be as a footballer.” He concluded, “It doesn’t always go the way you want it but you have to keep working no matter what.” Spellman, a supporter of Newcastle United who joined Newport during the summer, has undoubtedly faced the challenging aspects of football throughout 2024. He stated: “This year has been very tough for me with injuries. At Sunderland I was injured most of the year from January until I think April.” He continued, “It’s always tough but you just have to have mental strength and belief in yourself that you are going to get back to where you were.” A recurrence of injury further delayed his Newport career, as he sustained a groin injury only days before the season commenced. The player, previously on loan at Blyth Spartans, underwent a challenging recovery period leading up to his delayed debut for the Exiles against Crewe Alexandra on 28 September. Spellman once more demonstrated mental resilience, acknowledging the support of his team-mates and the Newport staff who assisted his recovery. He remarked: “That is why you need good staff and good people around you to help you and talk to you about tough situations and push you on.” He added, “It is always tough seeing the lads go out training knowing you cannot go. But its always about doing the right stuff in the gym so you can get back as quickly as possible.” Spellman, a Geordie and Newcastle fan who idolises Alan Shearer, described the unusual experience of playing for Sunderland. He commented: “At first it was a bit strange but when you are in the environment you are doing what you love, it does not matter what colours you are wearing.” He concluded, “You are doing what you love and what you dreamed of as a kid.” Spellman’s performances as a substitute have indicated that his speed and crossing prowess will benefit Newport. He also scored his inaugural Newport goal during a 3-1 victory against Salford. He now aims to contribute to Newport’s improved performance as they approach the winter schedule. Reflecting on his time both sidelined and now actively playing, Spellman stated: “I think the group we have and the ability in this team is massive.” He added, “The next two months up to Christmas are massive because we have a lot of games and we need to push on to get some good results.” Post navigation Footballing Brothers Keiran and Luke Thomas Set for First Competitive Match in FA Cup Murray Comments on Rapid Changes in Hibernian’s Atmosphere
