A significant concentration of ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging points, potentially the largest in Europe, is slated for construction at a prominent retail complex. A planning application has been lodged with Trafford’s planning team for the redevelopment of a former petrol station site, situated near the Marks & Spencer store at one of the primary entrances to the Trafford Centre. The proposed development is set to feature a new Starbucks Drive Thru, an ultra-rapid charging facility, a dedicated super-charger lounge, a car showroom, and a contemporary digital advertising screen integrated with a vertical “living wall” adorned with plants. Matthew Anderson, development director for Pradera Lateral, the management company for the Trafford Centre, indicated that these plans would introduce an additional 47 250kW ultra-rapid chargers. This expansion would increase the total number of chargers at the centre to 65, which could establish it as the largest ultra-rapid charging hub across Europe. “We have worked closely together to design a scheme that compliments both Trafford Centre and the local area, is forward thinking, secures biodiversity improvements and supports more sustainable forms of travel to and from the centre,” he added. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reports that, contingent on approval, construction work is targeted to commence in early 2025.
