Stoke City defender Enda Stevens, who joined the club from Sheffield United in July 2023, has stated that the team must focus on enhancing their game management following their Championship defeat by Sheffield United. The Potters experienced a 2-0 loss at Bramall Lane, a result that extended their period without a win to four matches and positioned them one point above the relegation zone in the league standings. This marked Stoke’s first defeat since the conclusion of September and occurred after three consecutive draws. “It was a game of moments and they came out on the right side of those,” Stevens informed BBC Radio Stoke. He added, “The timing of the goals killed us.” Stevens further explained, “We didn’t have that little bit of what you need here – it’s a hard place to come. They’re unbeaten at home and you’ve got to take chances.” Stoke had entered the match following two draws at home: a 1-1 result against Norwich, and subsequently letting a two-goal lead slip against Bristol City. However, with the squad still adjusting under new head coach Narcis Pelach, a visit to the Blades, who had dropped only two points at home thus far, was always expected to be a demanding fixture. “They’re one of the favourites to go up,” Stevens, aged 34, remarked. He continued, “[But] a lot of the lads can see there are chances in games, chances to play and dominate.” Stevens expressed hope, stating, “Hopefully we will learn – especially from the last two games – how to manage games a bit better.” Stevens described his experience working under Pelach as “brilliant,” and despite the Spanish coach having secured only one victory in his seven matches in charge, the full-back conveyed confidence in a promising future. He elaborated, “We’re building a structure and a way of playing.” Stevens noted, “Previously we’ve come out of the blocks firing and taken leads and the fans have been excited to watch us play.” He added, “We are working on something and there’s a lot of lads in there willing to learn and wanting to do well. ” Concluding, Stevens stated, “We’re listening and trying to do well and I honestly believe this club is going in the right direction under this regime.” The match at Bramall Lane was the Blades’ initial home fixture since the passing of their former player, George Baldock, who had played alongside Enda Stevens at Sheffield United between 2017 and 2023. Prior to the contest, homage was paid to the defender, who died last month at the age of 31. Stevens, a former team-mate of Baldock at Sheffield United, received applause from the home supporters as he placed a wreath before the start of the match. Stevens remarked, “It was an emotional day. It was the sort of situation you never expect to be in. I thought it was incredible – the respect they paid to him.” He added, “He was an absolute gentleman and a legend for the club. ” Stevens concluded, “I shared a dressing room with him for six years and it’s something I can’t fathom. The club will carry his name for years and years.”
