A Labour Member of Parliament has stated that the family members of the late Conservative MP Sir David Amess require “answers” concerning potential shortcomings preceding his demise. Sir David, who represented Southend West, was fatally stabbed in 2021, leading to IS extremist Ali Harbi Ali receiving a whole-life prison sentence for the murder. Katherine Amess, the MP’s daughter and an actress, informed a newspaper of her desire for a comprehensive inquest. David Burton-Sampson, who was elected as the Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh in July, informed the BBC that he intends to reach out to Ms Amess to “see what can be done”. Burton-Sampson stated, “We need to get the answers that Sir David Amess’ family, understandably, want.” He further added, “The murder of Sir David Amess was an absolute tragedy. “We need to understand if there were failings that could have prevented this from happening, both for Sir David’s family and for the future safety of all Members of Parliament.” Sir David was assaulted on 15 October 2021, during a constituency surgery he was conducting in Leigh-on-Sea. Coroner Lincoln Brookes initiated an inquest into Sir David’s passing on 27 October 2021; however, a comprehensive inquest has yet to take place. Ms Amess informed The Sunday Times, “We have never had a full public examination into the events leading up to his death.” She continued, “My hope was, through this full public inquest, everybody would be given the knowledge of how this happened, and [that would] prevent it happening again.” “And right now it feels like we are waiting for the next one to happen.” “It’s been failing upon failing.” In January, her solicitor informed the BBC that Ms Amess was “horrified” by her father’s murder and sought for lessons to be learned. Ms Amess, residing in California, has initiated legal proceedings against both the police and the Home Office. Documents from the High Court indicate that she submitted a personal injury claim against these two authorities in December. Essex Police and the Home Office confirmed their awareness of the ongoing court action. A service of remembrance took place earlier this month at St Peter’s Catholic Church, situated near the location where Sir David was killed. Father Jeff Woolnough commented that it was “important to keep his memory alive”.
