Torquay United manager Paul Wotton praised his team’s “terrific” effort after they defeated National League South leaders Weston-super-Mare 4-2, despite playing with 10 men. This victory adds to Cody Cooke’s recent form, who has scored five goals in Torquay’s last seven National League South matches. In the game, Luke Coulson opened the scoring for Weston in the 16th minute. Lirak Hasani then equalized for Torquay with a long-range strike in the 29th minute. Will Jenkins-Davies put “the Gulls” ahead five minutes later, but Sam Avery brought Weston level in the 42nd minute. Torquay missed a chance to lead at half-time when Cody Cooke had a penalty saved in first-half added time, following a foul on Hasani. Hasani received a red card three minutes into the second half for a challenge on Reuben Reid, leaving “the Gulls” with 10 players. Nevertheless, the team’s performance remained strong despite the numerical disadvantage. Cooke compensated for his earlier penalty miss by scoring two goals within a 10-minute period, which maintained “the Gulls'” third position in the league table. This victory caused Weston to lose their top spot, with Truro City now leading the league on goal difference after their 4-1 win against Weymouth. Torquay currently trails the leaders by three points. Speaking to BBC Radio Devon, Wotton stated, “I just thought we were terrific. Some performances out there were heroic really, so all in all a fantastic night for Torquay United.” The win extended Torquay’s unbeaten streak across all competitions to seven games, while also concluding a sequence of three consecutive league draws. Wotton further commented, “Fortunately we came out on top which I think we rightly deserved.” He elaborated on the team’s approach: “It had a lot of real key moments in the game, even with 10 men I thought we were brave, we stuck at it, we kept two up top. You could have easily sat there and just tried going for a draw, but what’s the point? You’re better off going for it and trying to get three points.” Post navigation Crystal Palace Manager Oliver Glasner Previews Fulham Match, Discusses Injuries and Andersen’s Return Glasgow Warriors Captain Kyle Steyn Extends Contract Until 2028
