Tottenham, currently holding the seventh position in the Premier League table, has been charged by the Football Association concerning alleged homophobic chanting by its supporters during a 3-0 victory against Manchester United earlier this season. The alleged chanting reportedly occurred during the 49th and 79th minutes of the Premier League match held at Old Trafford on September 29. Following the match, Tottenham issued a condemnation of “abhorrent homophobic chanting,” characterizing it as “simply unacceptable,” and pledged to implement the “strongest possible action.” The club faces two charges of violating FA Rule E21, a regulation that governs the conduct of supporters at matches, specifically “for misconduct in relation to crowd control.” A statement released by the FA indicated that Tottenham “failed to ensure” that fans “conduct themselves in an orderly fashion” and “don’t use words or otherwise behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, indecent or insulting way with either an express or implied reference to sexual orientation.” Tottenham is granted until next Wednesday to submit a response to the FA regarding the charge.
