East Midlands Railway (EMR) has announced the discontinuation of two Sunday services connecting the East Midlands with London. This measure is part of an initiative to accelerate travel times to and from the capital. EMR stated that these early morning services, originating from Nottingham and Derby respectively, will cease operation starting 15 December. According to the company, this change will provide Network Rail with an extended period for conducting overnight maintenance. EMR indicated that the revised timetable will result in reduced journey times across 12 services, with some experiencing improvements of up to 28 minutes. Services connecting Nottingham, Derby, and Sheffield are among those expected to benefit from these faster travel times. Specifically, the services being withdrawn are the 07:00 GMT departure from Derby and the 07:24 departure from Nottingham. Network Rail explained that these adjustments would enable overnight maintenance to extend for a longer duration, thereby ensuring that subsequent trains would not be subjected to identical speed restrictions. Mark Budden, the route director for Network Rail in the East Midlands, commented on the changes, stating: “Like all things, the railway needs to be maintained and improved, and the majority of this work needs to be carried out when trains are not running to keep everyone safe.” He added, “These changes to the timetable are a real testament to the work between EMR and Network Rail. As well as faster journeys, it should also mean more reliable services because Network Rail teams will have more time to carry out maintenance on a crucial part of the line.”
