The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) reports that close to 17,000 vehicles without valid tax have been clamped in Kent from 2022 through September 2024. The Local Democracy Reporting Service indicates that the DVLA clamped 10,731 vehicles during 2022 and 2023, with an additional 6,172 vehicles clamped thus far in the current year. Councillor Neil Baker, who serves as Kent County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, commented: “There is the odd person who simply forgets to pay for whatever reason but clearly not to that extent.” In a statement, the DVLA affirmed its dedication to addressing the issue of untaxed vehicles. Kent County Council neither takes part in nor gains financially from the DVLA’s enforcement operations. Mr Baker stated: “As a tax, it would be nice if the money people pay for vehicle excise duty actually came back to the local authorities who are in charge of looking after the roads but sadly that does not happen.“It seems that the money goes into the general pot and doesn’t always go where it’s needed.” The DVLA reports that approximately 98% of vehicles currently on the road are taxed appropriately. A spokesperson for the agency remarked: “We have a range of enforcement measures including fines and penalties and are working hard with our national wheel-clamping partner to clamp untaxed vehicles on our roads,” adding, “It is easy for drivers to pay their vehicle tax, including using our quick and accessible online services.” The car rescue service RAC advises that vehicle owners must settle the outstanding tax and a £100 release fee to reclaim their vehicle. Should a vehicle be impounded, a daily storage charge may be applied. The vehicle will be retained for a maximum of 14 days prior to its disposal through auction, breaking, or crushing.
