The Cornish Seal Sanctuary, located in Gweek, has taken in three injured seal pups at its hospital facility. Monarch, along with Caterpillar and Tiger Moth, was rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) on November 14th in Port Isaac. Monarch was found to be malnourished and had a swollen left flipper, which medical staff suspected might be fractured. Since his arrival, Monarch has undergone an X-ray of his flipper and commenced antibiotic therapy to treat an infection. Tamara Cooper, the sanctuary’s curator, stated, “Monarch is doing well, and after a somewhat uncertain start he’s now in the best place to recover from his nasty flipper infection and recuperate fully before moving into our nursery pools.” Cooper expressed gratitude to the “passionate” teams at BDMLR for their “crucial role in rescuing and caring for these fragile seal pups”. She also mentioned that a specialized BDMLR facility functions as an overflow center, providing pups with “vital support when our hospital reaches capacity”. Over 40 pups have been rescued during the current pupping season, which extends from late August through January.
