An individual accused of stealing diamond jewellery valued at £36,000 has made a court appearance. Sergei Khatchaturov, from Ontario, Canada, was apprehended on Saturday at Guernsey Airport as he attempted to board a flight destined for London, police reported. The Guernsey Magistrates’ Court heard that authorities were notified after two pairs of earrings were taken from Derek Birch and Son on The Pollet, St Peter Port, at approximately 11:20 BST on Saturday. Judge Gary Perry ordered Mr Khatchaturov to be held in custody until 25 November for a pre-trial review, with a committal date set for 4 December. Guernsey Police stated: “Police officers went aboard the aircraft following the arrest to ensure that no other passengers were linked to groups seen near to the location of the offence and to recover baggage, which was already on the flight, belonging to the arrested man.” The stolen items were recovered from within the baggage which was on the aircraft. Officers indicated that an investigation and a subsequent search caused a delay of about 20 minutes for the aircraft.
