A man has received a two-year jail sentence after being found guilty of raping his seven-year-old sister. Newcastle Crown Court was informed that the perpetrator, who a judge stated was driven by jealousy, was 14 years old when he committed the rapes on at least five separate occasions. Recorder Marco Giuliani stated that the defendant, whose identity is protected and who is currently in his 20s, was required to be sentenced based on the age he was when the offenses took place. The court was informed that following their mother’s death, the siblings resided in separate homes. The brother reportedly felt jealous of his sister’s more stable living circumstances. Evidence presented to the court also indicated he experienced bullying at school and spent all his time in isolation within his room. During a period of one year, the court heard that he raped the girl on at least five occasions when she came to visit him. He instructed her to maintain it as their “little secret,” warning her that she would be held responsible if he faced consequences. The judge observed that the boy clearly experienced a “traumatic childhood,” which included regularly witnessing violence and drug use within his household. However, Recorder Giuliani further stated that numerous children live in “worse circumstances” and do “not resort to taking out their jealousy by raping their siblings.” The judge told the boy, “You knew what you were doing was wrong,” and noted that his actions were driven by “control and jealousy.” In a personal statement, the victim described how the abuse had profoundly devastated her life, leading to severe anxiety, issues with trust, and affecting every aspect of her existence. She expressed feeling “embarrassed” and stated she “didn’t want to be the weird kid who was raped by her brother.” Additionally, a restraining order was imposed, prohibiting the defendant from making contact with his sister for a period of 25 years. He is also required to register on the sex offenders register for ten years. For updates, follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
