Sung Kook “Bill” Hwang, a former Wall Street investor, has received an 18-year prison sentence in connection with a substantial fraud scheme that resulted in billions of dollars in losses for banks. This sentencing follows Hwang’s conviction for fraud and market manipulation, stemming from the collapse of his investment fund, Archegos Capital Management, in 2021. Before delivering the sentence, US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein stated, “The amount of losses that were caused by your conduct are larger than any other losses I have dealt with,” a remark reported by Reuters news agency. The imposed prison term was somewhat less than the 21-year sentence requested by prosecutors, yet it remains notably lengthy for an offense categorized as a white-collar crime. Prosecutors had additionally requested a restitution payment, but the judge has not yet declared a ruling on this issue. The sentencing hearing is scheduled to continue on Thursday. Hwang’s conviction stemmed from his deception of major investment banks while covertly accumulating significant positions in various companies. Archegos’s inability to repay its creditors triggered a widespread sell-off of shares, leading to the fund’s rapid collapse in under a week, marking it as one of the most substantial hedge fund failures since the financial crisis of 2008. Key financial institutions that incurred considerable losses due to Archegos’s downfall included Credit Suisse, now integrated into UBS, along with Japan’s Nomura and Morgan Stanley. Attorneys representing Hwang had advocated against his punishment, referencing his Christian faith and charitable contributions. They also stated that his fortune, once estimated at $30bn (£23.7bn), had diminished to approximately $55m. The judge characterized the pleas for leniency as “utterly ridiculous” given the financial sums involved, and drew a comparison between Hwang and Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of FTX, who was sentenced to 25 years for fraud last year, as reported by Bloomberg. Hwang’s legal representatives did not provide an immediate response when contacted by the BBC for comment. Patrick Halligan, Hwang’s deputy at Archegos and a co-defendant, who was also convicted on three criminal charges during the same trial, is slated to receive his sentence at a hearing on 27 January.
