An individual described as a “violent predator” has been given a life sentence for the killing of an elderly man within the victim’s own residence. Sukhkit Bains, 46, fatally stabbed Michael Martin, 72, at Mr. Martin’s home located on St Botolph’s Road, Worthing, West Sussex, in March. Bains, whose address is Brighton Road, Southgate, Crawley, received a life imprisonment sentence, including a minimum term of 22 years, at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday. In a statement, Mr. Martin’s family expressed that his murder was “something we will never be able to comprehend or forgive”. Surveillance footage captured Bains entering the premises on 20 March, which was the final occasion his acquaintance, Mr. Martin, was observed alive. A neighbor reported hearing disturbances emanating from the residence on the night in question. A family member reached out to Bains after failing to hear from Mr. Martin, whose mobile phone remains unlocated. Bains informed them that Mr. Martin was experiencing pain but was asleep. Mr. Martin was discovered at his home by a family member at 18:30 GMT on 22 March, bearing stab wounds and other assault injuries. Bains, also identified as Sukhjit Bains, attempted to hide the homicide by cleaning the knife, flipping over a rug stained with blood, and placing his bloodied attire into a washing machine. “Our dad met a violent predator that preyed on the vulnerable,” the family stated, following Bains’ murder conviction earlier this week. “He has taken away the last precious years we had with our dad and grandad. We had the best dad in the world.” “He was our hero and he taught us to love, to be kind and to always look after each other.” “There are simply no words to describe the level of pain and loss we continue to feel.”
