Vincent Morgan has been found guilty of murdering his former partner, Lisa Welford, after she was discovered in a river with multiple injuries. Morgan had asserted that Ms. Welford had jumped into the River Derwent in Malton, North Yorkshire, on 24 April. However, he was convicted of her murder at Leeds Crown Court on Monday. At the time of the murder, the 47-year-old Morgan was subject to his third violence prevention order and was on police bail, with a condition explicitly forbidding contact with Ms. Welford. Testimony during the trial indicated that law enforcement officers were summoned to the location around 23:40 BST, where they located Ms. Welford in the water and Morgan situated on the riverbank. Ms. Welford, aged 49, was transported to a hospital, where medical examinations revealed she had sustained head injuries, a cerebral hemorrhage, fractured ribs, a fractured collar bone, and a severely fractured femur. She succumbed to her injuries the subsequent morning. According to police, the nature of her injuries combined with the low-growing branches present at the riverbank would have rendered it impossible for her to have voluntarily entered the water by jumping. Earlier that same evening, CCTV surveillance footage captured her walking unassisted and without any apparent injuries in the direction of the river. A former partner characterized Morgan, whose address is Chandler’s Wharf in Malton, as a violent and controlling individual. The court was informed that he possessed a “long history of physical abuse” directed towards Ms. Welford. Her friends characterized her as a “strong, caring woman.” Detective Chief Inspector Shaun Page of North Yorkshire Police stated that the force endorsed the verdict. He commented, “We work extremely hard to protect victims of domestic abuse from harm and pursue those responsible.” The police force has initiated a self-referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct concerning this case. Furthermore, Morgan was convicted on two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. His sentencing is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
