An individual who engaged in persistent harassment and stalking of his former partner has been issued a “landmark” 10-year stalking protection order. South Yorkshire Police stated that he had made “multiple attempts to frighten the woman,” inundating her with threatening phone calls, messages, and emails, in addition to appearing at her residence over a period of several weeks. This order prohibits the man from making contact with or approaching the woman, entering her postcode area, trying to ascertain her location, or discussing her on social media platforms. The police force indicated that this order, issued at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court earlier this month, represents the first instance of its type to be granted within the county. A police spokesperson confirmed that officers initiated proceedings against the individual, whose identity is withheld to safeguard the victim, following the woman’s report of unwanted contact in July. She had stated that all her efforts to prevent contact had been unsuccessful. Upon investigation, officers from the Domestic Abuse Team identified the behavior pattern as stalking and subsequently ensured the safety of the victim and her child. The man was also sent back to prison due to a breach of his licence conditions, with the application for the protection order having been submitted in August. Stalking Protection and Investigations Officer Carla Davey commented: “Securing this order is a landmark for South Yorkshire Police, as the first ten-year order to be granted in our force. “I’m pleased that the courts have recognised the severity of the stalking behaviour and the fear this man caused.”” She expressed hope that this action would convey a “clear message” to both offenders and victims, indicating that the police would deploy all available resources in such situations. She further stated: “I would encourage anyone who is experiencing this to report to police,” adding, “You don’t have to live in fear, you will be listened to, and we can help you.””
