Following a 93rd-minute equalizer conceded against Sunderland on Tuesday, resulting in a 1-1 draw, Bristol City head coach Liam Manning stated that his players must “step up” their attacking efforts to convert promising displays into victories. This marked the third instance this season where The Robins have dropped points by allowing a goal after the 85th minute. The team is scheduled to play QPR on Saturday, having secured only two wins in their last seven fixtures. Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, Manning elaborated on the team’s situation, stating: “It’s the final bit for me in terms of being able to win games and learning to win games but the big thing is it’s not far away. I don’t think many people can argue we’ve hit a level of consistency so far this season performance wise.” He further emphasized the players’ responsibility: “It’s the hardest part but the lads need to step up as well. We’ve been honest, it’s a really good group that we can be honest and have those tough conversations and put it out there. If you want to be successful, if you want to win, if we want to get where we want to get to people have to make sure they step up and be counted and they’re good enough.” Statistical data from Opta indicates that Bristol City generates numerous scoring opportunities, averaging 9.1 shots inside the box per game across 20 matches this season, placing them fourth in the Championship. Nevertheless, their shot conversion rate stands at 10%, positioning them 12th in the league rankings. Furthermore, in three of their last five matches, including games against Sunderland, Portsmouth, and Burnley, the team managed only two shots on target. Manning acknowledged the players’ dedication, though he could not specify when improvements would become evident. He stated: “The lads are desperate to do it, we’ll give everything we can but ultimately, when I look back, we can’t keep saying we’re performing well but not picking up points.” He continued, emphasizing the professional demands: “We’re in an industry where you have to deliver, me, that’s players, that’s everybody.” Manning concluded by affirming progress while stressing accountability: “Are we heading in the right direction? 100%. But over time we’ll have to make sure people are held accountable and people deliver because ultimately we all want to win.” For the upcoming fixture against QPR, The Robins will be missing striker Sinclair Armstrong, who sustained a “little injury” during the midweek game. Manning commented, “We’re still assessing that at the moment.”
