Testimony in court revealed that a man murdered a 20-year-old individual and subsequently deposited his dismembered remains in a park. Dajour Jones, aged 27, is currently facing trial at the Old Bailey on charges of murdering Jamie Gilbey. Mr. Gilbey’s remains were discovered in undergrowth near Cantley Gardens within South Norwood Lake and Grounds, following his last confirmed sighting on 27 January 2022. Prosecutor Simon Denison KC asserted that Mr. Jones perpetrated a “sustained, vicious murder on a defenceless Jamie Gilbey.” The prosecution further contended that blunt-force trauma to Mr. Gilbey’s head and body suggested a prolonged assault involving two distinct implements. Mr. Jones, however, refutes the murder charge, claiming he acted in self-defence after Mr. Gilbey allegedly confronted him with a knife and took his phone. Readers are advised that this report includes content that some individuals may find disturbing. According to Mr. Denison, Mr. Gilbey was last observed alive entering Mr. Jones’s room at the Fitze Millennium Centre, a residential facility for homeless individuals where both men resided. The defence counsel for Mr. Jones maintained that he did not dismember Mr. Gilbey’s body, but rather transported it from the hostel in a single journey and entrusted it to other individuals for disposal. The prosecution alleged that Mr. Jones obtained a sizable suitcase on 28 January, which he brought back to his room and subsequently used for three separate trips over the subsequent days. Mr. Denison further stated that Mr. Jones had “calmly disposed of the body in the suitcase that he acquired for that purpose” and conducted a “remarkably thorough” clean-up operation within his room. The prosecutor concluded by asserting: “It really is a murder in cold blood.” The jury was informed that these three trips encompassed two visits to Cantley Gardens, locations where Mr. Jones disposed of Mr. Gilbey’s body. A third excursion was made to Love Lane Green in South Norwood, where, according to the prosecution, clothing and bedding “heavily stained with blood” were discarded. Police discovered Mr. Gilbey’s body in undergrowth on 8 March 2022. Mr. Denison characterized Mr. Gilbey as a “very vulnerable, physically unimposing 20-year-old man who above all wanted to have friends.” He further stated that Mr. Gilbey was an “innocent victim of a highly dangerous man” and had been “incapable of presenting any physical threat to the defendant.” Mr. Denison informed the jury that Mr. Jones possessed a “history of violent offending and causing serious injury to others.” The judicial proceedings are ongoing.
