Rory Gallagher led Derry to their initial Ulster championship in 24 years during 2022. However, he resigned just before the provincial final the following year, after his estranged wife leveled domestic abuse accusations, which he refuted. Derry GAA has confirmed that its stance, which precludes Rory Gallagher from resuming a role in the county’s football management, remains unaltered. According to a report by The Irish News, external, the county’s executive was scheduled to vote on a proposition during a meeting on Thursday evening. This proposal would have included Gallagher as a member of a management team led by Enda Muldoon, but the intended vote was subsequently postponed. On Friday morning, BBC Sport NI posed several inquiries to Derry GAA regarding its ongoing efforts – now spanning over four months – to identify a replacement for Mickey Harte. Among these questions was whether Derry’s declared stance from 20 September, stating that Gallagher “is not in consideration for the position,” was still valid. A Derry spokesman responded by saying: “Our position remains the same and the process is on-going.” The brief statement from Derry provided no additional information regarding the expected timeline for filling the vacant role. Gallagher led Derry to their initial Ulster championship in 24 years during 2022 but resigned in the period leading up to the county’s provincial final appearance a year afterward, following abuse allegations made by his estranged wife, Nicola Gallagher, which he denied. Subsequently, the GAA “temporarily debarred” him in September 2023, after an independent panel was commissioned to examine the allegations. The former manager of Donegal and Fermanagh successfully contested that disbarment in February. A statement issued by his solicitors on 20 September asserted that there was no “legal impediment” preventing his return to a senior position within the sport. The statement further declared: “Our client fully intends to return to inter county management in the near future.” It also stated: “Two separate investigations have led – rightly – to decisions by the PPS not to prosecute. Mr Gallagher has not been charged with a single offence.” Later that same day, Derry GAA informed BBC Sport NI that Gallagher was not under consideration for the Oak Leaf vacancy. Derry is currently the sole county without a football management team appointed for the 2025 campaign, which is set to commence in late January with the start of the Allianz League.
