Singer Chris Stapleton secured three awards, including male vocalist of the year, at the yearly Country Music Association (CMA) Awards ceremony held in Nashville on Wednesday. However, the evening’s most significant honor, entertainer of the year, was bestowed upon fellow superstar Morgan Wallen. The country music genre has recently experienced a resurgence, with artists such as BeyoncĂ© embracing its style. A point of contention arose when she did not receive any nominations from the CMA, despite having released one of the year’s most successful country songs, “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Supporters had theorized she might become the first Black woman to be considered for album of the year for her work “Cowboy Carter.” Thousands of attendees, many adorned in sequins and cowboy hats, gathered in Nashville for the yearly awards ceremony. This event represents the most significant night of the year for country music enthusiasts, with the CMA Awards consistently attracting prominent stars to “Music City.” Wallen, who led in nominations prior to the event but was absent from the ceremony, claimed the highest honor three years after his record label suspended him for employing a racial slur. The artist subsequently issued an apology and re-established his relationship with his record label. His double album, “One Thing At A Time,” spent 16 weeks at the top of the US chart last year. A speculated appearance by country icon Dolly Parton did not occur, but those present at the Bridgestone Arena witnessed various other performances. These included Post Malone’s rendition of “California Sober,” during which he was accompanied by Stapleton on stage to commence the event. Stapleton additionally received awards for song of the year and single of the year for “White Horse.” Shaboozey, a new artist to the CMA scene who is featured on “Cowboy Carter,” also performed live for an audience of fans wearing cowboy hats. Concurrently, Lainey Wilson, who served as a co-host for the celebrity-filled event, earned the accolades for female vocalist of the year and music video of the year. Further notable moments involved Megan Moroney being recognized as best new artist, Cody Johnson securing album of the year for “Leather,” and Brooks & Dunn being named best vocal duo. A special homage was also given to George Strait, frequently referred to as the monarch of country music. He received the lifetime achievement award and honored his manager, Erv Woolsey, who passed away earlier this year. The event in Nashville featured more than just country musicians, as Olympic gymnast Simone Biles also made an appearance, presenting the award for female vocalist of the year. Copyright 2024 BBC.
