Errigal Ciaran manager Enda McGinley has expressed profound admiration and stated he is “awestruck” by fellow Tyrone club manager Jody Gormley, who recently disclosed his diagnosis with terminal cancer. The two managers had faced each other in the Tyrone SFC final on October 25. Just eight days after their sideline confrontation in the Tyrone SFC final, McGinley was again at Healy Park, guiding Errigal Ciaran to a tight 0-12 to 0-10 victory over St Eunan’s in the preliminary round of the Ulster club championship on Saturday night. However, McGinley stated that Errigal’s ongoing achievements, the sport of football, and life itself have been significantly re-evaluated due to Gormley’s openness and composure in confronting his situation. McGinley remarked, “For him to handle it the way he has just sets a very high bar for everybody else and challenges everybody else to enjoy life, appreciate life and not to sweat the small stuff, or even the medium-sized stuff like this here.” He added, “Perspective is never a bad thing to have, but that’s about as extreme as you can get.” Across Tyrone, there is widespread awe regarding his resilience, disbelief that an individual of such fitness and strength could be affected in this manner, and immense respect for him. McGinley expressed his belief that Gormley’s reaction to his diagnosis provides a “brilliant lesson.” “He’s facing his biggest challenge now there is no doubt, but people are just awestruck by the way he’s dealing with it,” McGinley stated. He continued, “I think that’s a brilliant lesson to learn and everybody will take wee lessons from that and take wee bits back into their own lives.” Jody Gormley, representing Tyrone, competed against Mickey Linden of Down during the 1996 Ulster Final. Speaking on The GAA Social, Gormley revealed he has no fear of dying, having initially conveyed the news of his diagnosis to the Trillick players following their 0-12 to 1-8 county final loss to Errigal. McGinley recounted, “I was embarrassed to tell you the truth, having stood after the match and been asked about the pressures of managing your own club and the pressure you put yourself under.” He added, “Then when that news starts filtering through late on Friday night, talk about putting things in perspective.” “We were in the middle of the celebrations so it made you think. Yes, you still wanted to enjoy the night, but you realised there is a hell of a lot more to life,” McGinley concluded. Both Gormley and McGinley are former Tyrone midfielders who distinguished themselves while wearing the county jersey, and both have also managed Antrim. They share the common experience of returning to manage their respective home clubs. Gormley guided Trillick to the Tyrone title in 2023 during his inaugural year as manager, a feat McGinley replicated with Errigal in 2024. “I took huge pride in the way that (2024) final was played between ourselves and Trillick because what Jody has done with that team and instilled in those boys is remarkable,” Gormley added. He further stated, “It was because of that we knew we had to hit such a peak against them.” McGinley noted that the Trillick boss had been held in high esteem long before the news of his illness emerged last week. “Jody would have been admired anyway for how he conducted his business,” McGinley commented. He continued, “He had some brilliant days in the Tyrone jersey and as a manager he’s graced the Tyrone club scene as well.” “With Trillick he has stamped his authority within Tyrone club football as well and raised the bar significantly, one we had struggled to match up to previously, and it took every bit of us to get over the line,” McGinley concluded. He concluded by saying, “Everybody is thinking about him, everybody is admiring him to be honest, and everyone in Errigal is acutely aware of what the Trillick club are looking at. Please God he is dealing with it fantastically well and we send him every best wish.” Post navigation New Jockey Competition with £1.5 Million Prize Fund Commences Great Britain Men’s Sevens Team Aims High Despite Part-Time Status
