An 81-year-old woman, Janet Holmes, described as “incredibly positive,” has died after being fatally struck by a bus. The incident occurred on Wednesday just before 10:30 GMT as Ms. Holmes was crossing the road at the intersection of Prince’s Street and Newgate Street in Bishop Auckland. Durham Police reported that Ms. Holmes received treatment at the scene before succumbing to her injuries at the hospital. Authorities confirmed the arrest of the bus driver, who has since been released as the investigation proceeds. In a statement, Ms. Holmes’s children indicated that she was en route to her arts and crafts group, “which she loved,” at the time of the incident. They further stated that she possessed an “amazing ability to form strong positive relationships with almost everyone she met,” adding, “Her loss will leave an enormous gap in the lives of not just her own family but also the many friends she made both old and new.” Durham Police urged anyone with information pertinent to the ongoing investigation to come forward.
