Extensive redevelopment proposals for the historically significant Droitwich Lido have been revealed. This £8 million expansion initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at establishing the town as a premier national destination for leisure and wellbeing. The local authority indicated that this revitalization is expected to stimulate regeneration in the area and reduce the lido’s financial dependence on Wychavon District Council. According to the proposed plans, the current cafe will be replaced by a brine pool, spa, and additional leisure amenities. A new cafe will also be constructed, alongside an expansion of the grounds to incorporate a new swimming area. A four-week public consultation period is currently in progress, inviting residents and the wider public to submit their perspectives. The feedback gathered from this consultation will be presented to councillors before a definitive funding decision for the project is made in February. Matt Nicol, who chairs the Droitwich Spa Place Board and has been involved in shaping the town’s vision through these plans, stated: “We’re committed to supporting Wychavon’s vision for enhancing our town for both residents and visitors. “The lido project has been a central focus for over a year and we’re thrilled to invite residents to join us as we take this exciting next step. “The project is a result of significant effort and collaboration from many groups, including Save Our Brine Baths and Friends of Droitwich Spa Lido, to create something we can all truly take pride in.” The Droitwich Lido holds distinction as one of Britain’s few remaining inland, open-air saltwater pools. It first opened its doors in 1935, closed in 2000, and was subsequently reopened in 2007 following a successful public campaign to restore its operation. Further enhancements outlined in the plan include improvements to the lido’s entrance and access path, the addition of “wing extensions” to the existing cafe building, and the reintroduction of the Art Deco building into use. Additionally, the water play area is slated to be relocated to Lido Park. Representatives from the council, Wychavon Leisure, and the Droitwich Spa Place Board will be available at the library to address inquiries and receive input regarding the proposal. Councillor Richard Morris, executive board member for economy and tourism, commented: “Residents made it clear during the consultation for the town prospectus they wanted to see the lido invested in to create a sustainable future for an asset they are proud of. “I’m delighted this proposal delivers on that ask. Incorporating the brine pool also means we have an opportunity to bring the two facilities unique to Droitwich together for the first time.”
