German police have reported that 79 individuals sustained injuries following violent altercations between opposing groups of supporters after a regional league football match on Saturday. The incident occurred in Jena, a city located in the east-central region of Germany. Following the game in Jena, supporters of FC Carl Zeiss Jena and BSG Chemie Leipzig breached the gates separating their sections and engaged in what law enforcement officials characterized as “uninhibited violence.” Authorities intervened to quell the disturbance, employing tear gas and batons. As a result of the clashes, 64 supporters, 10 police officers, and five stewards were among those injured. Prior to the match, approximately 350 home fans conducted an unscheduled march through the city, during which pyrotechnics were ignited. Police were compelled to bring the procession to a halt. Throughout the game, which the home team won 5-0 and was attended by 7,224 spectators at the Ernst-Abbe Sportfeld, both sets of fans repeatedly discharged pyrotechnics. FC Carl Zeiss Jena released a statement describing the conclusion of the game as an “unpleasant end” and extended wishes for “a good and quick recovery” to all those affected.
