A woman has been recognized as the national bingo caller of the year, having spent only two years in the profession. Issy-Mae Hunt, 21, a native of Ipswich, started her employment with Buzz Bingo following a friend’s suggestion to join the organization. After serving as a caller, also known as a presenter, in Ipswich, she relocated to Derby to continue her career and subsequently entered the National Game Bingo Caller of the Year competition. The title was conferred upon her at an awards ceremony held in Wakefield on Sunday, an event she stated brought her family and friends to tears. During her time at college, Ms. Hunt sought part-time employment, and a friend prompted her to join Buzz Bingo in Ipswich, even though she was not a frequent player of the game. She informed BBC Radio Suffolk that she later donned a hotdog costume during her trial for the full-time position in Derby, a choice that helped her distinguish herself. In the National Game Bingo Caller of the Year competition, participants from bingo establishments nationwide were assessed based on their understanding of the game, their calling abilities, and their showmanship. Ms. Hunt incorporated an additional element to impress the judging panel. “I played the ukulele and I made my own original cover to Five Years’ Time by Noah and the Whale,” she explained. “I did a spin of my journey through bingo – it was a cute little song and I showed a video, it was really cool.” The pool of entrants was narrowed down to seven finalists before Ms. Hunt was declared the victor. She mentioned that her family experienced profound emotion. “They were all crying,” she said. “I had mum and dad there with me with my partner, all my friends came to surprise me.” “Everybody was absolutely crying their eyes out but they absolutely love it, it’s amazing.”
