Following a consultation where the majority of residents expressed support, a new 20mph speed zone will be implemented in two villages. Cambridgeshire County Council, which has been rolling out this speed restriction initiative across the county over recent years, has now given its approval to apply the lower speed limit to most residential thoroughfares within the developed areas of Houghton and Wyton, situated near St Ives. The A1123 will be excluded from this new limit. In a statutory consultation conducted by the county council, the majority of the 27 participants endorsed the proposal. One participant cited “careless and inconsiderate driving” as a reason for support, while four individuals raised objections, questioning the enforceability of the reduced speed limit. Prior to this, a 2023 consultation organized by Houghton and Wyton Parish Council revealed that 90% of respondents favored the establishment of a 20mph zone, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The statutory county council consultation subsequently took place. A parent expressed support for the initiative, noting that their daughter cycles to the village school and observing that traffic was “often not slowing down sufficiently.” Another proponent, identifying as both a cyclist and a pedestrian residing in the area, characterized the 20mph limit as “realistic and safe.” Conversely, an opponent voiced concerns that “20mph increases the conflict between drivers particularly when some will drive far below 20mph” and further commented, “stop ruining the village with more pointless metal signs.” The specific date for the implementation of this new zone has not yet been determined.
