A military veteran, aged 103, is set to join fellow service members across the United Kingdom in observing Remembrance Day. Jack Waterfield will commemorate the occasion at Timken Grange, his care home located in Northampton. Mr. Waterfield commenced his military career in 1941 with the Royal Air Force (RAF). During World War Two, he was deployed to North Africa, Malta, and Gibraltar as part of a specialized four-person mission. Rob Martin, who serves as managing director of care services at Anchor, the organization operating Timken Grange, and is also a veteran, commented: “Jack’s [account of the war] is special. He travelled the world and shared some incredible stories.” Among Mr. Waterfield’s most notable assignments was an operation involving the flight of 50 Spitfires to Malta. These aircraft were plagued by oil leaks and malfunctioning radios, and their pilots had no prior training on aircraft carriers. He recalled, “It’s a wonder some of them landed safe.” Mr. Waterfield reflected that the nature of wartime travel was “gruelling” and highlighted the challenge of acquiring new languages, such as French, which he admits “I’ve long forgotten.” Mr. Martin further stated: “[Jack] talks about his experiences in a very informal way. He really enjoys opening up and sharing his stories.” For updates on Northamptonshire news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
