The proposed overhaul of a West Sussex theatre is set for re-evaluation following an unforeseen increase in expenses. The Capitol Theatre, situated in Horsham, has a 90-year history and last underwent refurbishment in 2003. Horsham District Council’s proposal for the venue includes increasing its seating capacity, replacing its boilers, adding additional toilets, and renovating the foyer. The £10.7 million project is now subject to further review because a contractor raised its cost estimate by 25%. Paul Anderson, the council’s director of communities, commented: “This is the right thing to do and builds on the Council’s reputation for prudent financial management. “Quite simply, at this point in time and based on the predicted costs, the financial risk was too great.”We are still committed to making improvements which will enhance the overall customer experience, meet our environmental ambitions and secure this much-loved cultural venue for the future, whilst maintaining and ensuring financial diligence.”
