Approximately £1 million worth of drugs were confiscated during a series of operations targeting illegal cannabis cultivation sites, leading to the arrest of 10 individuals. Police operations conducted at 12 distinct premises in Rotherham between 6 and 13 December uncovered as many as 1,000 cannabis plants, each estimated to have a street value of £1,000. South Yorkshire Police reported that the 10 individuals were taken into custody on suspicion of various offences, including cannabis cultivation, immigration violations, and electricity abstraction. The police force specified that a facility located on Fitzwilliam Road housed 170 plants, and a cannabis farm situated on Herringthorpe Valley Road contained plants with an estimated value of up to £150,000. Inspector John Crapper of Rotherham Central NPT stated: “These results are part of Operation Grow, our ongoing work to tackle cannabis grows in Rotherham.” He added: “These grows are often linked to organised crime and the exploitation of vulnerable people who are forced to mind the farms on behalf of gangs.” Inspector Crapper further noted that the raids provided the force with “valuable intelligence about those facilitating these enterprises”.
